A dent in a garage door panel looks like a cosmetic problem, and sometimes it is. But a bumper hit, a basketball, or a winter of ice and snow can also crack the steel, crimp a hinge mount, or weaken the panel enough that the door starts binding. Here's how to tell what you can live with, what needs one panel swapped, and when it makes more sense to replace the whole door.
Location matters more than size. A shallow dent in the middle of a panel is usually cosmetic. A dent along the panel's top or bottom edge, or near a hinge, is different: those edges are where panels interlock and where hinges and rollers attach. A dent there can keep the sections from folding cleanly through the curve of the track, which loads the opener and can push the door off track.
If the dent is shallow, the paint is intact, and the door still runs smooth and quiet, you can usually leave it. Watch it for a few weeks. Bare steel shows rust quickly, so touch up any chipped paint, and check that the door still sits flat against the weatherstripping on the bottom and sides.
Single-panel replacement works when the damage is limited to one section and the door model is still available. Newer insulated steel doors in standard colors are the easiest. Expect these signs that point toward a swap:
The catch is matching. Paint fades over the years, and a new panel on a ten-year-old door can show a slightly different shade. Bottom panels also take the most abuse and are the ones we replace most often, partly because the bottom panel is the only one that holds the bottom seal and the cable bracket.
If the door is discontinued, if several panels are damaged, or if the door is 20-plus years old with worn hinges and rollers, a new door is usually the better investment. Matching an obsolete panel is often impossible, and the cost of fixing an aging door piece by piece adds up. A new insulated door also helps with Utah's winter cold if your garage is attached.
Pushing or hammering a dent out from underneath can crack the skin or bend the stiffening struts. If a panel has a hinge or cable bracket attached, leave it alone: those parts are under spring tension. Photograph the damage, note your door's brand and size if you can find the label, and give us a call. We'll tell you straight whether it's a repair, a panel swap, or time for a replacement.
