Garage Door Opener Humming But Door Won't Move? Causes & Fixes

By Atlas Garage Door Service  |  November 2026  |  Utah County

You press the button, the opener hums or the motor spins, the light flashes, and the door doesn't budge. It's a common call this time of year when cold mornings put extra strain on worn parts. The sound itself points to the cause, so listen before you do anything else.

Step 1: Check Whether the Door Is Disconnected

Look at the red emergency release cord. If someone pulled it, or it snagged on a bumper or a bike handle, the trolley is unlatched from the opener carriage. The motor runs, but nothing pulls the door. With the door fully closed, pull the cord toward the opener to re-engage the trolley, then run the opener. If the carriage reconnects and the door moves, you're done.

Step 2: Try Lifting the Door by Hand

With the opener disconnected, lift the door. A balanced door lifts with moderate effort and stays at waist height. If it feels extremely heavy, like 100 pounds or more, a spring has probably broken. The opener was never designed to lift the full weight of the door, so it hums, strains, and quits. Do not keep pressing the button, since that can burn out the motor.

Other Common Causes

What Not to Do

Don't force the door open with the opener running, and don't touch the springs, cables, or the brackets at the bottom corners. Those parts are under extreme tension. If you see a gap in the torsion spring above the door, or a cable hanging loose, stop there and leave the repair to a technician.

Repair or Replace the Opener?

If the opener is under about 10 to 12 years old and the problem is a gear kit, belt, or capacitor, repair usually costs far less than a new unit. If it's older, lacks battery backup or modern safety sensors, and needs a major part, replacement is often the smarter spend. A technician can usually tell in one visit.

Whether it's a broken spring, a stripped gear, or a disconnected trolley, we diagnose it on the first visit and carry common parts on the truck for same-day repair.
